Os ataques de 11 de Setembro de 2001 ao World Trade Center, nos Estados Unidos, completaram 18 anos.
Os atos terroristas que espantaram o mundo todo e não apenas a cidade de Nova York foram responsáveis por 2.996 mortes e seis mil pessoas feridas, tudo por conta de dois aviões comerciais sequestrados que se chocaram contra as torres gêmeas do WTC naquela terça-feira.
Logo após os ataques, várias rádios dos Estados Unidos pararam de transmitir música e passaram a trabalhar em programações com informações sobre vítimas, pontos de ajuda, relatos de sobreviventes e mais.
A Clear Channel Communications (agora iHeartMedia), a maior proprietária de estações de rádio nos Estados Unidos, divulgou um memorando interno contendo uma lista de músicas que os diretores de programação consideravam "liricamente questionáveis" para tocar depois do ataque. As rádios passaram a colocar em sua programação canções com mensagens positivas.
Durante o período imediatamente após os ataques, muitas estações de televisão e rádio alteraram a programação normal em resposta aos eventos, e espalhou-se o boato de que a Clear Channel e suas subsidiárias haviam estabelecido uma lista de músicas com as letras que o Clear Channel considerava "questionável".
A lista não era uma exigência obrigatória para não tocar as músicas listadas, mas uma sugestão de que "talvez não quisessem tocar essas músicas". A lista foi divulgada pelo boletim independente da indústria de rádio Hits Daily Double, que não é afiliado ao iHeartMedia.
O site Snopes.com fez uma pesquisa sobre o assunto e concluiu que a lista existia como uma sugestão para as estações de rádio, mas observou que não havia uma proibição total das músicas em questão. A lista compilada foi objeto de atenção da mídia na época de seu lançamento.
Uma das "canções inadequadas" das 165 da lista era "Sunday Bloody Sunday" do U2.
O memorando da Clear Channel continha músicas que, em seus títulos ou letras, se referem vagamente a assuntos abertos entrelaçados com os ataques de 11 de setembro, como aviões, colisões, morte, guerras e violência, além do céu desabando, e armas, e até duas músicas comemorativas que lidam com eventos que ocorrem no mês de setembro.
